In Loving Memory of Curness Russell, II
The Heart Behind Consciousness Youth Expressions, LLC
It all began with a simple, beautiful moment—watching our young sons learn to read. This platform is lovingly dedicated to our eldest, Curness Russell, II, whose passion for learning, creativity, and self-expression inspired the creation of ConsciousNess Youth Expressions.
Curness began reading at age four with a set of Bob Books from Scholastic. By five, he was reading chapter books and rarely without a book in hand. At just eight, he announced his dream of becoming an architect. That vision took root early—he began designing using a game called Sims and eventually earned a Master of Architecture from Hampton University.
While architecture was his profession, music was his first love. Curness played saxophone in middle school and later taught himself electric guitar. He formed and performed in a blues band after college and occasionally played with the Al Jasper Band in Charlotte. His musical inspirations included Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, and João Gilberto.
He also had a deep love for nature and gardening. His college thesis on vertical gardens sparked a lasting passion, leading him to coordinate a community Tulip Festival. His favorite flower, the sunflower, reflected who he was—bright, bold, and full of life.
In January 2021, following a sudden seizure, Curness was diagnosed with Stage 4 Glioblastoma. He met the challenge with the same creativity and courage he brought to every part of his life—continuing to compose music, teach drafting and design, and plan for the future. In June 2022, he married his college sweetheart. He passed in December of that year.
Though he is no longer with us physically, his spirit lives on. His college rap name, ConsciousNess, now beats at the heart of our mission—to uplift and celebrate young boys for their creativity, brilliance, and self-expression.
